Charlotte Tuttle, wife of Frederick Sturgess, came to Vermilion from Roxbury, N.Y. in 1810, with her husband and six-weeks-old girl baby, Eunice, ......ariving at Vermilion in October. Near the mouth of the river they found a log cabin which had been built and deserted by a former settler....During the following summer they were all attacked with malaria and suffered greatly with fever and ague. Mr. Sturgess died and his widow married George Austin, again becoming a Widow in 1826. She died in 1877, aged eighty-five years.
