Birth
Her grandfather Antonio Lagos had always wanted a descendant named after his sister Mercedes, and when she was born, he and his wife were visiting Cuba. Mercedes' parents Joe and Jo sent a telegram to Antonio and Josefa stating simply words to the effect "Mercedes and her mother are doing well."
Note
Dolores BALL (Carr) noted in 1992 that "Mercedes reached the hearts of her aunts and uncles as well as her cousins. What stands out is how special she was to her Aunt Dee [LAGOS) and Uncle Pie [BALL], who were extraordinarily good to her after her father's death. Long after the death of Mercedes and her father Joe Baron, her mother, Jo LAGOS BESTEIRO commented "A book is made up of many chapters and I look at this as a closed chapter of the Book of Life but I know that their memory will always live in the hearts of the Lagos Family."
