William was the illegitimate son of an English aristocrat. His last name was Redwine. William's mother was a maid at the estate. When it became apparent she was pregnant with his child, she was sent to America. William's surname was Redwine, but he changed it to his stepfather's name, Underwood, after the Revolutionary War. Perhaps Wedgbar was his mother's maiden name. He went by the name William Wedgbar, aka Underwood, on his legal documents. |
