hero | Put out fire at residence April 1863 (Age 29)Address: 11 White Row Source: Morning Star (newspaper) Publication: London Citation details: "Frightful Death from Fire, " 8 April, 1863 Text: Last evening an enquiry was held at the London Hospital by Mr. John Humphreys, Middlesex coroner, respecting the death of William Poley, aged seven years, who lost his life under the following shocking circumstances: Thomas Poley, 11, White Row [11 White Row], said that on Tuesday morning he heard a noise in the room where deceased and his brother Alfred were. He went to see what was the matter, and he found their bed in flames and deceased's clothes on fire. He was burning fearfully, and he screamed out, 'Oh, it was Alfred made me do it, he told me to light the matches.' It appeared that deceased had got some lucifers and set fire to the bed and himself. Witness had much difficulty in extinguishing the flames, and was himself severely burnt. Mr. Appleyard, house surgeon, said the the skin and flesh were burnt off deceased's stomach and limbs. He was dreadfully charred, and recovery was of course hopeless. A verdict of 'Accidental Death' was returned. |

Mrs. Mary P. Wakefield, 76, died this morning at her home 142 Main-st. after an illness of three years. She was the widow of Commodore Fred W. Wakefield, founder of the F. W. Wakefield Brass Co., here, who died in 1934.
Mrs. Wakefield was born Sept. 28, 1874 in Brooklyn, N. Y., and has been a resident of Vermilion for the past 45 years. She was a member of the Congregational Church and its King's Daughters Sunday School Class and Missionary Society and the Vermilion Sorosis.
Surviving are six sons, Albert, William, George and Theodore, all of Vermilion and Fred and Ernest, both Chicago; two daughters, Mrs. Clara Hofrichter, Baltimore, Md., and Mrs. Ruth Stutz, Vermilion; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. ...
